Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher laid into Manchester United for their performance against Chelsea and was quick to criticise Henrikh Mkhitaryan for his role in the defeat.

The Red Devils were completely outplayed by The Premier League champions on Sunday evening and Carragher didn’t mince his words when assessing the match. United headed into the clash as slight favourites and this looked like a game where any fans, wishing to make extra money online, could do so by backing United to win.

Chelsea, however, had different ideas and matched United in every department and a 56th minute trademark goal by Alvaro Morata proved to be the difference in the clash at Stamford Bridge.

Manchester United manager José Mourinho has been criticised for the way he set up his side to play, as many believe Chelsea were there for the taking had he gone for all-out attack against a team low on confidence. Carragher was particularly critical of Mkhitaryan, claiming that United were playing with 10 men whilst the Armenian was on the pitch.

The 28 year old has not hit the heights he reached earlier in the season and has looked pedestrian in recent weeks, but with Mourinho not trusting Juan Mata enough in big games it raises a lot of questions. The defeat saw United slip further back in the title race as Manchester City, with manager Pep Guardiola and his band of orchestra-like playing personnel, moving eight points clear at the top of the table after a 3-1 victory over Arsenal earlier on Sunday.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Carragher said, “I thought United might as well be playing with 10 men with Mkhitaryan in that midfield. There was a lot of space in midfield with Eden Hazard, Cesc Fabregas and N’Golo Kante stepping in. Tiemoue Bakayoko caused big problems getting forward.” He added.

Mkhitaryan didn’t cover himself in glory and could find himself back on the substitutes bench after the international break.

The 28 year old Armenian international is a classy attacking midfielder who can play on the right or centre of attacking midfield. After a difficult start to his Old Trafford career, he has become a key part of Jose Mourinho’s team and helped them win the EFL Cup and Europa League last season. United’s next game is against Newcastle United on November 18, after the international break.
