Firstly, we have to start this little monologue with the assertion that we think José Mourinho is doing an OK job at Manchester United. It isn’t perfect but we don’t think we could have reasonably expected much more out of the first two seasons in charge.

We were happy with the three trophies in his first season, even if none of them were “A list”. We appreciated that the team would slide down the table somewhat in their quest for Europa League glory so the sixth place finish was acceptable, particularly as the winning of Big Vase meant automatic qualification for The Champion’s League.

The following season saw an improvement in league form and finish but very little, if anything, else. Second place was a decent ending to the season but didn’t mask the fact that United were 19 points behind City. (more…)

Well, that’s the first week out of the way. Only another five days to go before the return of Premier League football.

This is good news for lovers of the game, avid supporters and masochists as every form of satisfaction will be delivered or denied over the coming weekend.

Why is it that, when the Premier League has been absent since May, we get four games into the new season and have to have an international injury window?

Is this just because the powers-that-be are a bunch of sadists? We are not thinking necessarily of just the effect on the fans here. They will tune in to the meaningless rubbish served up as top quality international football because they have nothing else to watch, that’s just the way it is and is why England, for example, will always attract a decent sized crowd at Wembley despite being rubbish. According to The Guardian, which is often our go-to source for football news, Paul Pogba may be off to Barcelona in January.

To be fair, this little snippet of information is to be found in “The Rumour Mill” which is the nearest the paper’s reporters are allowed to printing truths, half-truths and the occasional porky although they are not to know that at the time.

Like most other publications they too have their sources and they will range from excellent and usually correct to rubbish and not worth the ÂŁ5.00 finders fee. (more…)

England’s superiority complex is what had held them back over the years. They have actually had some half-decent teams since winning the World Cup in 1966 but have usually gone out of tournaments meekly every time.

It is fair to say that this complex has become inverted and England have gone into most competitions expecting to be leaving for home early. They had, for many years, an inferiority complex, despite their supporters expecting them to win everything in which they have been involved for the last 52 years.

Now it is becoming clear as to why this has been happening. Using completely irrational logic they now think that LOSING a World Cup semi-final to a team ranked eight places below them in the world order is a successful tournament. (more…)

The impending international injury window has already seen Raheem Sterling pull out of the England team for the two utterly meaningless games against Spain and Switzerland.

It shows a little forethought from a player not deemed to be blessed with one of the higher IQs in the game because he obviously knows that he is not really good enough to play for Manchester City so, the last thing he wants, is to be injured whilst with England and then fail to get his place back in the City team.

In our book he would be behind Bernardo Silva, David Silva, Leroy SanĂ©, Ilkay Gundogan, Riyad Mahrez, Pep Guardiola, Mike Summerbee and uncle Tom Cobbley in the pecking order. Yes he really is that average. (more…)

Having boldly predicted that Manchester City would be the team to catch this season we also boldly predicted that Liverpool were probably the best equipped to catch them.

Having also written off Chelsea and Arsenal because of “new manager syndrome”, whatever that may be, and Tottenham Hotspur because, well, they won nothing last year and they have the same players this year so how can they win anything with that blasĂ© approach to life in the Premier League, we were left with Manchester United as the only other possible challengers to City’s crown. Liverpool sit proudly at the top of the Premier League. For the moment. JĂĽrgen Klopp, despite being a serial cup final attendee is also a serial cup final loser. He has now been in charge of Liverpool for three years and has won……NOTHING!

Is he under pressure? No. Why not? Nobody really knows. He has spent much more in the last two seasons than his counterpart at Old Trafford and yet JosĂ© Mourinho, who has won three trophies in his time at United as well as finishing runner-up in the Premier League, is under scrutiny EVERY day. Has Klopp got it right now…..?

Pep Guardiola has built a successful team at Manchester City. In the eyes of many football followers he has to win the Champion’s League to put the icing on the cake but that doesn’t take anything away from last season’s achievement of winning the Premier League with a record number of points amongst other things.

That is the big one and relies on a consistently good campaign where, at the end of a long season, it is the best team who are crowned champions.

The Champion’s League is a knockout competition despite it’s name. It comes alive when the group stages are over but it also becomes a lottery at the same stage. Luck now begins to play a big part. Bad refereeing decisions, injuries and suspensions can see a team eliminated who may previously have been the favourites to win it. (more…)

Can Chelsea really afford to sell Eden Hazard? Can they afford not to? It’s the age old question of whether the player wants to leave and if he should be kept against his will.

Hazard has recently expressed a desire to play Champion’s League football which, having only missed two seasons during his time at the club, is a little selfish.

Now, with Maurizio Sarri in charge, Manchester United and Arsenal looking nothing more than average and only Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester City to concern them, Chelsea should be fairly confident of a top four finish this season meaning that he would return to Europe’s top competition next time out. Jürgen Klopp has finally managed a “first” in his Liverpool career. No, he hasn’t won a trophy, but he has won the first two games of a new season for the first time since joining the club.

The fact that Liverpool were rather fortunate in their victory over Crystal Palace, who hit the crossbar and had a player wrongly sent off, is irrelevant and Klopp won’t be too worried about mere details such as these.

The 0-2 scoreline was also rather flattering as the second goal was scored, as is often the case, in the dying seconds of the game when Palace were pushing for an equaliser with Sadio ManĂ© running half the length of the pitch before stumbling past the goalkeeper to score. (more…)
