Well that was a mixed night for the city of Manchester. It turned out very well for the “United” of Manchester but the real “City” of Manchester fluffed their lines spectacularly.

In a game away from home, on a plastic pitch against a team who top the Swiss League having won all of their first six games, this was a potential banana skin for United.

They coped with it very well and, after a reasonable start by the Swiss, opened the scoring through a rejuvenated Paul Pogba. Now given more of a roaming role with Nemanja Matic and Fred as the two holding midfielders, the Frenchman is beginning to look the part. (more…)

Nice one Gareth! His latest wheeze is that anybody expecting to play for his England team in the future should be playing regularly at their club.

He did leave the statement open to a little interpretation in that if, for example, he wanted to pick a team made up entirely of players from the Championship, then this would not represent a problem.

If he sticks with Premier League players then his team will not be competing at the top, (not that it has done anyway since 1966).

If he puts his new rule into immediate practice then his next team will contain Jordan Pickford, Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier, Harry Maguire, Dele Alli, Harry Kane and some Vanarama Conference League players. (more…)

Firstly, we have to start this little monologue with the assertion that we think José Mourinho is doing an OK job at Manchester United. It isn’t perfect but we don’t think we could have reasonably expected much more out of the first two seasons in charge.

We were happy with the three trophies in his first season, even if none of them were “A list”. We appreciated that the team would slide down the table somewhat in their quest for Europa League glory so the sixth place finish was acceptable, particularly as the winning of Big Vase meant automatic qualification for The Champion’s League.

The following season saw an improvement in league form and finish but very little, if anything, else. Second place was a decent ending to the season but didn’t mask the fact that United were 19 points behind City. (more…)

To be fair, this little snippet of information is to be found in “The Rumour Mill” which is the nearest the paper’s reporters are allowed to printing truths, half-truths and the occasional porky although they are not to know that at the time.

So the board at Manchester United which, effectively, appears to be Ed Woodward, have decided to reward Anthony Martial’s poor performances, petulance and disobedience by offering him a new contract until 2023 with the usual raise in pay.

This is despite manager José Mourinho wishing to sell him and the player expressing a desire to leave the club.

Either Ed Woodward himself or the Glazers seem to have bestowed upon the diminutive marketing man from Chelmsford, a power of attorney which gives him the final say over everything at the club. He has proven on several occasions that his knowledge of football is, at best, dodgy, when he has preferred to look at transfer targets with a high marketing value rather than their potential benefit to the team. How is a fat football agent getting so much publicity? Mino Raiola is “acting on behalf of” Paul Pogba so, when he decides to insult Paul Scholes on social media, it is actually Pogba doing the insulting.

Now we know that isn’t the case and that the French player probably numbers Scholes amongst his favourite midfielders of all time. So why does he insist on continuing to employ an arrogant, obnoxious, fat and, admittedly rich, (which we had to include otherwise Bernard Manning would be spinning), so-and-so who, when he isn’t trying to extort as much money as possible from his clients and football clubs, is busy telling everybody else what to do. Another sunny day in Manchester, (does it ever rain there?), saw Huddersfield Town donning the shorts and the suntan lotion in another attempt to try and stop Manchester City scoring and, consequently, taking all three points from the game.

This, apparently, is something they have managed to do on the four occasions they have met since City won 10-1 at Maine Road back in 1987. On that day David White, Paul Stewart and Tony Adcock all scored hat-tricks whilst Neil MacNab scored the other goal and the three main men were at today’s game as guests of City.

The match started as it was always going to start and continued as it was always going to continue with City shading the possession 80-20 and, in truth, we didn’t really see how the statisticians had managed to find that much of the ball for Huddersfield. (more…)

So, thanks to a World Cup campaign which saw England drawn in a very easy group, (Belgium apart but two nations qualified anyway), saw them beat Tunisia, Panama, Colombia and Sweden before finally succumbing to yet another team BELOW them in the world rankings, Croatia, in the semi-finals, the team have risen to a lofty sixth place in the current standings.

This is mainly due to the rest of the world, with the exception of France and Croatia, suddenly forgetting how to play the beautiful game and becoming pretty average in the process.

Just for the record, and despite the way FIFA reaches these strange conclusions, England is not the sixth best footballing nation on earth. (more…)

When he was first appointed, José Mourinho was not universally accepted as being the “right man for the job” at Old Trafford. Some supporters, bored almost lifeless with the type of football served up by David Moyes and then Louis van Gaal, thought that Mourinho was just more of the same.

The majority, however, just wanted van Gaal out and Mourinho in based on the fact he was a proven winner with every club he had managed and United, having been starved of any serious success, (with van Gaal’s FA Cup win being the only exception), since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, were happy to oblige. It would appear that Tottenham Hotspur will need to play some more games at Wembley this season as, according to The Guardian amongst others, their new ground has not yet been granted a safety certificate and it looks as though there will be a delay in doing so.

This, of course, is grossly unfair, unless they play ALL this season’s games at Wembley.

How, for example, can they play two or three teams at the national stadium, a ground they are now used to and treat like “home from home” and then play others at a brand new ground which will be as foreign to them as it will to the opposition? There will be a marked disadvantage for the clubs who meet them at Wembley. (more…)
