bACKGROUND

Now there’s a leading question and one which has already been the subject of many a debate around the local hostelries of England and, probably, elsewhere.

In order to reach an, (almost), satisfactory conclusion we have to look at the cost involved in bringing them to the club against the number of goals scored.

Obviously as four of these players are in the first season with their clubs we will use only goals scored this season as the yardstick.

There are many articles written about the top strikers where they are dissected, compared, praised and criticised in equal measure. Many of the scribes who pen these words of wisdom are trying to convince a footballing public that they have them down to a tee.

They want us to think that they have described them in such depth that we now know everything there is to know about them and can make an informed deduction as to who is the better of them. (more…)

Alexandre Lacazette – Arsenal

A £52.7 million signing from Lyon, Lacazette scored with his first attempt at goal in his Arsenal debut. Shortly afterwards he was, totally inexplicably, dropped for the game against Liverpool where Wenger, in a moment brought on by ever-increasing bouts of insanity, preferred Danny Welbeck up front.

Arsenal, unsurprisingly, lost the game heavily and question marks have been raised again, and very early, about the role of the manager in this loss.

Why spend all that money on a player then drop him to the bench for the first “big” test? (more…)
