This week saw Burnley, once again, become one of the top six, if not the big six. Once more it was at the expense of Arsenal, who have now fallen to seventh after their 0-0 draw with West Ham on Wednesday.

Burnley beat Stoke City 1-0 with a late goal and the pressure is very much on Mark Hughes at this moment in time. What he wouldn’t give for a couple of wins!

In fact, Tuesday was a decent night for both of the top six teams who had games because Chelsea also returned to winning ways with a convincing 3-1 win at Huddersfield.

That win took them level on points with Manchester United for 24 hours at least! (more…)

After only two games of the new season we are already into the debate about who will finish in the top six, who will win the title and who will be relegated.

Whilst these are fair questions it is a little early to provide any concrete answers just yet. What we can do, however, is check the evidence we have so far and then do what the national press do all the time, indulge in wild speculation.

The advantage here is that, if we are right, we can say that we told you so and, if we are wrong then it was only wild speculation anyway and never intended to be taken seriously. That would seem to be a no-lose situation which is just the kind we like. (more…)

Arsenal can’t defend, Liverpool can’t defend, Chelsea play better when down to nine men and Manchester City find it difficult against a ten man defence.

You may be forgiven for thinking that the top clubs, having had a two and a half months break from competitive football, time to work on their style of play and money to buy new players where needed, would return to Premier League action with all guns blazing.

If Friday’s game was supposed to be an example of that then Arsenal didn’t stick to the script. They did, however, manage to achieve something which has been rare in the last few years. They won their first home game. They were lucky to do so as it would have been no surprise had their woeful defending resulted in more than the three goals they conceded. (more…)
