Nemanja Matić has decided that Manchester United need to sign some experienced players in order to challenge for the title next season.

What does this actually mean? Is he saying that Antonio Valencia (33), Ashley Young (32), Marouane Fellaini (30), Juan Mata (30), Ander Herrera (28), Alexis Sánchez (29) and himself (30) don’t have enough experience between them to win the Premier League title?

Or is he saying that the younger players aren’t good enough and need replacing with experience? So some of Pogba, Martial, Rashford, Shaw, Rojo, Lindelof and Bailly need to go and make way for some older players to come in! (more…)

When Sam Goldwyn was misquoted as having said that “a verbal contract isn’t worth the paper it’s written on” a more accurate misquote would have been that a contract of any description isn’t worth the paper it’s written on.

Whilst that would not be strictly true it is getting to the stage, particularly in professional top flight football, where the necessity of a contract could be called into question.

Over at Manchester City the dastardly deed has been done. Pep Guardiola has signed a contract extension which will keep him at The Etihad until 2021. Unless he leaves before the end of the contract! Or maybe he will fail spectacularly and get fired before the end of the contract! (more…)

Manchester City…..

Whilst most of the attention was on the newly crowned title winners being newly crowned, it should also be remembered that this was an important game for Huddersfield Town. They are still not safe from relegation and are only two points off the drop zone.

The possibilities are that they will go down along with Stoke City and, probably, West Bromwich Albion due to our “teams in stripes” theory. This, of course, means there is still a chance of Southampton being sucked through the trap-door as they are also a stripy team but, on this logic, Swansea will be safe! What is the hold-up regarding a new contract for Marouane Fellaini? Either he wants to stay with United or he doesn’t, it’s very simple.

He is not a world class player and so any pay rise he gets on his previous deal is a bonus and he should be grabbing it with both hands.

The fact that the negotiations have become so protracted appears to be because Fellaini now considers himself a better player than he actually is.

Yes, he is a Belgian international, but they are just as good when he is not playing. Yes, he can be an asset in certain games for United but they are, generally, a better team when he is not playing. (more…)

Arséne Wenger’s farewell to Old Trafford as Arsenal manager would have been an emotional one. Mixed emotions, that is, as he will no longer have to watch his side suffer any more of the humiliations handed out over the years which included a 6-1 and an 8-2 defeat.

He will also not be celebrating winning his first game there as he did in 1998 when Marc Overmars scored the winner or clinching the title there as he did in 2002 when Sylvain Wiltord scored the only goal and his team went on to win the double.

There was “Pizzagate” in 2004 when Cesc Fabregas, apparently, threw a pizza in the tunnel after the game. There is no proof he actually threw it at Sir Alex Ferguson but that is precisely who it hit! (more…)

This weekend sees games for the top six spread across three days. Only Liverpool and Chelsea played their games on Saturday with the former at home to Stoke City in the early game and the latter away to Swansea City in the late game.

A win for Liverpool would guarantee that they finish in the top four and mean another season of Champion’s League football at Anfield.

As it turned out a poor performance in drawing 0-0 with the relegation favourites was ample evidence as to why Roma will still think they have a chance of progresing to the final in Europe! (more…)

José Mourinho, regardless of how many times he may argue to the contrary, is a manager who wants to win trophies.

It could be said that ALL managers want to win trophies but, for some reason, Mourinho is wired up in such a way that his desire to win competitions trumps any other footballing emotion that may exist within his slight frame.

ArsĂ©ne Wenger was driven to win trophies but it was also important to be judged on the style of his teams and the perfect example would be the “Invincibles”. That particular season is probably the one of which the Frenchman is proudest yet they only won the Premier League that year. (more…)

Although it pains him every single time he mentions it, José Mourinho has been reasonably quick to point out that Manchester City have won the Premier League title on merit. They have been the best team and have produced the best, and most attractive to watch, performances.

By definition, and something you won’t hear the Portuguese admitting, they also have the best manager.

So what does he intend to do about it next season? Can United really raise their game to be more of a challenge to Guardiola’s team? If they want to win the title the simple fact of the matter is that they have to. (more…)
