Apparently the transfer of Toby Alderweireld to Manchester United was a non-starter. Ed Woodward and Daniel Levy only spoke once during the summer and that was at the instigation of the Spurs chief who was enquiring about United players.

Yerry Mina was considered too expensive when the extortionate agent’s fees were factored in and Jerome Boateng was never a serious consideration due to his proneness to injury and potentially spending as much time on the Old Trafford treatment table as Bastian Schweinsteiger and Owen Hargreaves, (also bought from Bayern Münich), before him.

Despite Sky Sports News’ best efforts, the transfer window deadline day was a wet blanket as far as the top six were concerned. Their reporters did their best to exaggerate, build the highest of mountains out of the tiniest of molehills, get excited about absolutely nothing and, short of downright lying, inject some life into a thoroughly boring and uninteresting final day.

The top six managed just ONE signing between them and that was a loan deal when Mateo Kovačić joined Chelsea from Real Madrid.

The best recent centre-back pairing at Old Trafford has been Rio Ferdinand alongside Nemanja Vidić.

Since then there have been numerous partnerships tried, millions of pounds wasted and José Mourinho is STILL moaning about needing a new centre half!

Currently at the club, not including the younger players, are Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly.

Rocket scientists may choose to disagree but we don’t think that ALL the managers who have been involved in these purchases were bad managers. They certainly made some bad choices at times but to continually get the centre-backs wrong is just plain careless. Read the rest of this entry »

It’s a case of “not going, going, gone” for three of the Premier League’s most famous goalkeepers.

Not going…..

For the first transfer window in a while David De Gea and Manchester United can relax about the goalkeeping position.

This time out there has been no mention of the player being chased by Real Madrid, or anyone else, for that matter.

FA Community Shield - Manchester City v Chelsea

Not too long after Manchester City’s convincing 2 – 0 win over Chelsea at Wembley, Manchester United were toiling to a 1- 0 defeat in Bavaria.

Pep Guardiola’s chalk had strolled to victory, collecting the first trophy of the season on the way, without Ederson, Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva and Raheem Sterling.

Likewise, José Mourinho’s cheese took on Bayern Münich without Romelu Lukaku, Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matić, Marouane Fellaini, Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia. This is not to suggest that the last two would have made any difference whatsoever but others may have done.

By the end of the game in Germany, United had most of their youngsters on the pitch and the team, in age if nothing else, resembled the City team which BEAT Bayern in America. Read the rest of this entry »

Where is Paul Pogba going to be playing his football next season? Well, it depends upon your rag of choice. According to The London Evening Standard he is going to Turin where he will find Juventus waiting for him. This deal would see Miralem Pjanić go the other way.

But wait a minute! The Daily Express say that he is going to Barcelona and, not only that, but they know the real reason why! He wants to play with Lionel Messi, so there!

It seems as though Manchester United have finally forced Daniel Levy to reveal his hand. Not only has their reported attempt to sign Yerry Mina from Barcelona got him all jittery, but it has made him throw all of his cards on the table. Very un-Levy like!

He is now admitting that he is prepared to sell Mousa Dembélé and Danny Rose as well as United target Toby Alderweireld. This will all be music to Mauricio Pochettino’s ears coming, as it does, just a week before the transfer window closes and leaving very little time, if any, to replace them.

Daniel Levy, from underneath his desk in the boardroom at White Hart Lane, (the new one, that is), has dictated a memo to his secretary which has now been circulated to everyone he deems important with, as a courtesy, a copy being sent to Mauricio Pochettino .

So, according to Claude Puel, the Leicester City manager, Manchester United’s interest in Harry Maguire may have been fabricated in order to unsettle the player.

As conspiracy theories go it isn’t a very good one, nor is it very original. Firstly, Maguire does not look the type who would be bothered too much about interest from a bigger and better club. Yes, he would like to play for Manchester United but he is also realistic enough to be aware that he has just signed a five-year contract with Leicester, so a move for anything less than totally silly money would be out of the question. For the last few years the top six in England’s Premier League has been very predictable. They may have switched positions at times but it has always been the same six teams.

Last season, Chelsea and Arsenal were the ones to miss out on the Champion’s League places and it is surely no coincidence that both clubs start the coming season with a new man in charge.

Manchester City, in case you were holidaying on Mars, ran away with the title with Manchester United finishing second, a mere 19 points behind. Tottenham were third and Liverpool fourth.
