Now that we know that all five English teams have qualified for the knockout stage of the Champion’s League, it got us to thinking how much of an achievement this is.

It also got us to thinking if it would be possible, from all five teams, to come up with a team made up just of English players.

It was a struggle, which somewhat dilutes the achievement of qualification, especially when considering that roughly half of the players in these teams who successfully negotiated the group stage of what used to be called the “EUROPEAN” Cup aren’t even European, never mind English! (more…)

As the majority of football fans prepare to enter a time of mini-hibernation due to yet another international injury window, we look at the number of players that the top clubs have had to release for this “break”.

Arsenal

The Gunners have eight players involved in senior internationals during this break and they are:

Firstly, we apologise to fans of Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Arsenal and even Everton.

Much as we admire the optimism of the supporters of these clubs we have to think that it is misguided.

With the exception of Arsenal, the other clubs which made up last season’s top seven will be expecting a more successful campaign next time out. Arsenal will just be hoping for one, without any real conviction.

However, judging by recent transfer market activity, only Chelsea, City and United have already improved or will significantly improve their squads and, in Chelsea’s case, not much improvement is necessary. (more…)

Good old Arsene. He never lets you down. Well, not very often anyway. OK, quite a few times in recent years. But give the guy a break, after all he keeps having to play teams like Bayern Munich in the Champion’s League. Quite why this appears to faze both him and his players so much is a mystery. He can come up with tactics to beat the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea in knockout tournaments, he just can’t seem to do it when it’s a foreign team, (or Manchester United in Europe). (more…)

Shortly before the transfer window officially opened Louis van Gaal told everyone who would listen that he wanted ALL his transfer business concluding before the pre-season tour to the US of A.

This makes sense in many ways. It gives any new signings the chance to get to know their new team mates on and off the pitch. It gives them the chance to get to know the club and the way it works. It also gives them the opportunity to play some games where the result doesn’t really matter. All of this culminating, hopefully, in a harmonious and reenergised team returning to the UK raring to go. (more…)
