In the opening game of the new Premier League season Manchester United beat Leicester City 2-1. The score may have been rather predictable, especially when United’s team was announced and it looked far stronger than the one originally envisaged given the manager’s pessimism about available players, but the game was quite close and Leicester controlled large portions of it.

It turned out that Paul Pogba could manage most of the match as could other returning World Cup attendees David De Gea, Victor Lindelof, Fred and Marcus Rashford. (more…)

Despite Sky Sports News’ best efforts, the transfer window deadline day was a wet blanket as far as the top six were concerned. Their reporters did their best to exaggerate, build the highest of mountains out of the tiniest of molehills, get excited about absolutely nothing and, short of downright lying, inject some life into a thoroughly boring and uninteresting final day.

The top six managed just ONE signing between them and that was a loan deal when Mateo Kovačić joined Chelsea from Real Madrid.

That means Manchester United who, defensively, were second best to Manchester City last season, didn’t manage to add to their current FIVE international centre-backs. (more…)

Where is Paul Pogba going to be playing his football next season? Well, it depends upon your rag of choice. According to The London Evening Standard he is going to Turin where he will find Juventus waiting for him. This deal would see Miralem Pjanić go the other way.

But wait a minute! The Daily Express say that he is going to Barcelona and, not only that, but they know the real reason why! He wants to play with Lionel Messi, so there!

So, reading between the lines, Paul Pogba will be going nowhere and will line up alongside Fred and Nemanja Matić in United’s midfield in the coming season. (more…)

The champions seem to be relying on last season’s heroes to retain the title this time around. They have, in fairness, added top quality in Riyad Mahrez but, having been cheated out of Jorginho by Chelsea’s immoral and unethical way of conducting business, they seem no nearer to replacing Yaya TourĂ© although they still have a bit of time left yet. Mesut Ă–zil has retired from international football. Not for the usual reasons of being too old, or too slow or even too good. No, he has retired because he feels disrespected after racist comments were made about him following his being photographed alongside the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip ErdoÄźan.

What did he expect? Whilst we deplore all racism there was bound to be some reaction to such a thoughtless action.

ErdoÄźan is head of the oppressive government which has been accused of human rights abuses as well as being outspoken about German politics. (more…)

So the big clubs have jetted off around the world on their pre-season tours. Manchester’s United and City are in America where they will be joined by Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur. Chelsea are travelling around 20,000 miles and starting off in Australia and Arsenal begin in Singapore .

These “far-away” games are followed by matches nearer home in the likes of Dublin and Nice.

Why do teams feel the need to travel so far to play a few games of football? After all, the World Cup has only just finished and a lot of players won’t even be going on tour with them. (more…)

It’s not a bad time to be Mancunian at the moment. The city itself is far and away the best in Britain and would do well, if it were possible, to sever all ties with those idiots in Westminster who think that life begins and ends in London.

The weather is hot and sunny, the two Manchester Premier League clubs are the best two teams in Britain, Lancashire have just beaten Northants in a T20 double header at Old Trafford and England are in the World Cup semi-final.

Manchester United – End Of Term Report – Must Do Better!

José Mourinho will point to a second placed finish in the Premier League and, no doubt, try and spin this as progress on last year’s sixth place. Taken in isolation he is right, there has been a slight improvement in league performance.

What must also be taken into account is that the only other team to improve on last season were Manchester City and we all know what they did! In fact, of the top six, United and City were the only two to improve on last season’s eventual league position.

Chelsea went from first to fifth, Arsenal went from fifth to sixth, Tottenham Hotspur went from second to third and Liverpool remained static in fourth. So the fact that United managed to climb into second can be put down, in part, to the failure of the others to improve or even maintain their previous season’s form. (more…)

Manchester United got back to winning ways with a reasonably convincing win away at Bournemouth on Wednesday evening.

Mourinho rang the changes, as he said he would, but nobody really believed him when he said the players were playing for a place against Tottenham in the FA Cup semi-final.

If that was the case then Alexis Sánchez won’t be playing as he didn’t feature at all, despite sitting on the bench for the whole game.

Neither of United’s answer to Waldorf and Stadler played for one minute so can we expect them to be left out against Spurs. They should be using Mourinho’s logic as Darmian and Shaw did nothing wrong. (more…)

The short answer to that one is; none.

Having said that, the likelihood of David De Gea being sold unless he wants to be sold is practically zero. The same can probably be said about Romelu Lukaku who, in his first season and with plenty of critics, has still managed to score 26 goals in all his appearances to date.

Alexis Sánchez would also be on the “unlikely to be sold” list as he is a genuinely world class player and Mourinho will expect to see the best of him next season when he will have had a full pre-season build-up with the squad.

Nemanja Matić, as a Mourinho favourite, is probably also safe from the chop.

Anybody else would appear to be fair game. (more…)
