So it’s nearly that time of the season again folks! Yes, it’s almost upon us. It’s that game that never decides the title, is rarely a classic yet still manages to attract a very large worldwide TV audience.

Maybe that would explain why Sky, (and, no doubt, other TV channels), build this game up as the best anyone is ever likely to see even if they do live to be 200. As we said, it usually isn’t and this one probably won’t be either.

Still it will be interesting to see if Pep Guardiola can continue his march to a second Premier League title in succession or will JosĂ© put the brakes on it by beating his old foe? (more…)

Whilst we here at WSA have very little time, if any, for Ed Woodward and the role he is obviously unable to fulfill at Manchester United, we are also getting a little tired of José Mourinho’s barbed comments whereby everything that is wrong with the club is someone else’s fault.

We know he has been one of the most successful club managers ever. How could we not know when he insists on reminding us at every opportunity?

We also know that he appears to remain dedicated to the cause at Old Trafford despite still not settling in Manchester and despite, having spent more than ÂŁ300 million since his arrival, seeing the team regress. (more…)

Well that was a mixed night for the city of Manchester. It turned out very well for the “United” of Manchester but the real “City” of Manchester fluffed their lines spectacularly.

In a game away from home, on a plastic pitch against a team who top the Swiss League having won all of their first six games, this was a potential banana skin for United.

They coped with it very well and, after a reasonable start by the Swiss, opened the scoring through a rejuvenated Paul Pogba. Now given more of a roaming role with Nemanja Matic and Fred as the two holding midfielders, the Frenchman is beginning to look the part. (more…)

Two of England’s finest stepped into Champion’s League action for the first time this season. Tottenham Hotspur travelled to Milan where they met Inter and Liverpool travelled to Anfield where they were playing PSG.

The former seemed to be in control of their game and led 0-1 for most of it, thanks to a goal from Christian Eriksen.

Inter were decidedly average so quite how they managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat will be a source of disappointment for Mauricio Pochettino, particularly if Spurs fail to qualify from this group. (more…)

In direct competition with each other for the viewing affections of WSA this Saturday was the Vitality T20 blast or, more precisely, Lancashire, against the dubious attraction of watching a team from London play a team from Liverpool in the Premier League.

No contest, Lancashire versus Worcestershire in the first semi-final it was then. We could join the football after this game which would, no doubt, prove that the game of cricket can regularly provide more excitement than the game of football.

And such was the case but only for fans of Worcestershire. Lancashire were pretty awful and lost the game by 20 runs and thus ended our interest in finals day. (more…)

Europe’s “top” coaches who, apparently, don’t include Pep Guardiola who is probably the toppest, but do include Arséne Wenger who is neither a coach nor was he, latterly anyway, one of the top ones, have requested that UEFA take another look at the away goals rule. You know the one, it’s when a cup tie finishes level and the win is awarded to the team who scored the most goals in the away leg.

We were always under the misapprehension that the rule was introduced to stop teams boring supporters to death by defending for ninety minutes in the away leg of a tie, usually having won the home leg 1-0. It was to replace the coin toss and encourage the away side to play attacking football, or so we thought. (more…)

All of those Manchester United “supporters” who want José Mourinho to be shown the door marked “do one”, should be careful what they wish for.

We here at WSA are United through and through and it is difficult to watch this team most of the time, but patience is required.

We also found it very difficult to watch teams assembled by Wilf McGuinness, Frank O’Farrell and Dave Sexton. The team managed by Sir Alex Ferguson for the first five years of his tenure was an awful sight to behold and lost regularly.

Then we got David Moyes and Louis van Gaal so, if you think this is bad, where have you been for the last 50 odd years? (more…)

Liverpool sit proudly at the top of the Premier League. For the moment. JĂĽrgen Klopp, despite being a serial cup final attendee is also a serial cup final loser. He has now been in charge of Liverpool for three years and has won……NOTHING!

Is he under pressure? No. Why not? Nobody really knows. He has spent much more in the last two seasons than his counterpart at Old Trafford and yet JosĂ© Mourinho, who has won three trophies in his time at United as well as finishing runner-up in the Premier League, is under scrutiny EVERY day. Has Klopp got it right now…..?

Pep Guardiola has built a successful team at Manchester City. In the eyes of many football followers he has to win the Champion’s League to put the icing on the cake but that doesn’t take anything away from last season’s achievement of winning the Premier League with a record number of points amongst other things.

That is the big one and relies on a consistently good campaign where, at the end of a long season, it is the best team who are crowned champions.

The Champion’s League is a knockout competition despite it’s name. It comes alive when the group stages are over but it also becomes a lottery at the same stage. Luck now begins to play a big part. Bad refereeing decisions, injuries and suspensions can see a team eliminated who may previously have been the favourites to win it. (more…)

Can Chelsea really afford to sell Eden Hazard? Can they afford not to? It’s the age old question of whether the player wants to leave and if he should be kept against his will.

Hazard has recently expressed a desire to play Champion’s League football which, having only missed two seasons during his time at the club, is a little selfish.

Now, with Maurizio Sarri in charge, Manchester United and Arsenal looking nothing more than average and only Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester City to concern them, Chelsea should be fairly confident of a top four finish this season meaning that he would return to Europe’s top competition next time out.
