José Mourinho, regardless of how many times he may argue to the contrary, is a manager who wants to win trophies.

It could be said that ALL managers want to win trophies but, for some reason, Mourinho is wired up in such a way that his desire to win competitions trumps any other footballing emotion that may exist within his slight frame.

ArsĂ©ne Wenger was driven to win trophies but it was also important to be judged on the style of his teams and the perfect example would be the “Invincibles”. That particular season is probably the one of which the Frenchman is proudest yet they only won the Premier League that year. (more…)

The answer is that they want both. Not through greed but because up the road, in east Manchester, Pep Guardiola is proving that having both is possible.

In all our years watching Manchester United there has rarely been a prolonged period of time where attractive football has been accompanied by trophies and, yes, we can go back a fair bit further than some of the so-called “fans” of today. You know the ones, they are screaming for the manager’s head having won two trophies in his first season and now sitting second in the Premier League while still contesting the later stages of both the FA Cup and the Champion’s League. In his latest chinwag with the nation’s finest press and broadcasting representatives, José Mourinho managed to express an opinion which hasn’t been met with gasps of surprise or “what’s he going on about now?” type questions.

He claimed, quite categorically, that Manchester United may be a big club but it is not a big team.

Pause for breath while the assorted menagerie which passes itself off as intelligent authors of the truth digest this profound statement.

José Mourinho and some of the United “supporters” need to get over their latest defeat by Manchester City and stop making excuses as to why the game was lost.

Ander Herrera was correctly NOT given a penalty for his dive in the City penalty area.

Even if the penalty had been awarded there is no guarantee that it would have been scored.

Even if it had been scored there is no guarantee that United would have gone on to draw the match, never mind win it!

Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young are both ageing wingers being played out of position. Had it not been for David De Gea over the last few seasons, United’s defence would have been exposed as the shambles it actually is. (more…)

Apart from all of the money which is thrown at him on a regular basis, is José Mourinho really getting the recognition he deserves for his achievements?

Leaving aside all his trophies, both domestic and in Europe, with his previous clubs. Leaving aside his transforming of struggling clubs such as Chelsea and Inter Milan, both of which he turned into title winners and leaving aside his record of being only the fifth manager to have won the title in four different countries, we sometimes wonder what he has to do to please some people. Manchester United usually start to make their mark on the Premier League from January onwards. At least, that was always the case when Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge.

This season they haven’t done too badly when considering that they have only lost two games and one of those, based on form, should have been won.

Had they managed to beat Huddersfield Town, however, they would still be five points behind Manchester City who have reached this stage of the season unbeaten.

So, in order for the “Fergie effect” to actually have any effect, City need to lose at least three games and the derby next week would be a good start! (more…)

In another article from years gone by we questioned the wisdom of Manchester United in appointing Ed Woodward as the man to deal with transfer business. This was a particularly onerous task at the time as United had just allowed Sir Alex Ferguson to retire and David Gill to leave the club at the same time.

As regular readers will no doubt be aware, we cannot be numbered among Wayne Rooney’s greatest fans. With this in mind we had decided, a while ago, not to give him any more press having concluded that he was already one of the most talked about footballers in existence and a lot of what was being said about him was, in our opinion, overrating him far more than was necessary and even more than he was overrating himself!

His latest act of unwarranted petulance has, however, forced us temporarily out of retirement on the subject of the hard-to-like scouser. Just as one of his chapters comes to an end, we begin a new one.

As we have said all along, he has been a good footballer in his two short spells at Everton and his thirteen years at Manchester United, but he never achieved the greatness many misguided people thought he would. (more…)

Discussions here at WSA recently turned to the subject of football “legends” and the qualifications required in order to become one.

The conversation all started when someone in the office was reading a piece from manutd.com which was about club “legend” Denis Irwin.

The question here is; what has Irwin personally done to deserve the title? Note the word “personally“, because this is what should determine whether a person deserves the legendary status or not.

Many people think that, because Irwin won many titles and cups during his long spell with Manchester United, then this entitles him to be called a legend. We happen to disagree. (more…)

JosĂ© seems to have accepted his lot. Either that or he knows something of which we are unaware. Maybe Dithering Ed is close to delivering a package containing Ivan Perisić. Maybe he is working tirelessly in an attempt to satisfy his manager’s thirst for a fourth signing. Maybe he isn’t and has decided any more will have to wait until January. Whatever is the truth we supporters, as usual, are the mushrooms

We have to rely on press and TV reports which are sketchy at best and plain false at worst. Naturally, we don’t expect Mourinho to list the players he wants at one of his press conferences and we understand the unsettling effect it would have on those players if he did. We also understand the problems this would cause with other clubs. (more…)
