The first question to be asked is; do either of the two clubs really need him? And the short answer to this question is; no, they don’t, not really.

Sánchez is a goalscorer and creator of the highest order and would improve virtually any club for whom he played.

City, however, already have Sergio Agüero and Gabriel Jésus scoring goals and, on the creative side, they have Kevin De Bruyne, Leroy Sané, Raheem Sterling, Ilkay Gündogan, Benjamin Mendy, David Silva, Bernardo Silva and Yaya Touré, so it is difficult to see where he would fit into the side. At around the same time last year Manchester’s City and United were about to meet each other in the derby, the loss of which was to be followed by a change in fortune for United.

Having started the season, along with City and Chelsea on a 100% winning run they were to go on and draw many games they should have won and finish the season in sixth, whilst the other two, as we all know, finished first and second.

Here we look at the opening few games of the so-called “big six” and compare them, where possible, to results against the same opposition last season. (more…)

They have played the same amount of games. They have won the same amount of games. They have scored the same amount of goals and they have conceded the same amount of goals. They have both drawn one game and neither have lost a game. Consequently they have the same amount of points thanks to their identical tallies in everything else.

They are, however, only three points ahead of Chelsea and have only played five game so it’s still definitely very early days yet. (more…)

There goes another weekend and now we can all look forward to the Carabao Cup. Yes, dear readers, the Carabao Cup fills in for the Champion’s League this week and much excitement will be available to fans when they watch United take on Burton Albion at Old Trafford and City play Mr. Entertainment himself, Tony Pulis and his West Brom team at The Hawthorns.

Not this week the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Münich and Qarabag. No, it is the lesser known teams of football, the minnows who get their chance in the spotlight. (more…)

Well folks, it’s the weekend again. It seems like a mere seven days since the last one and that only lasted two days! Maybe Monday-Friday should be the weekend and the other two days could be the rest of the week. That would play havoc with the football schedules!

Anyway, Manchester United face Everton on Sunday thanks to the latter’s involvement in Big Vase. This Sunday lark should be a very temporary arrangement for the Toffees as, judging by the way they are playing, they will not be proceeding beyond the group stage. (more…)

The first thing to point out is that Paul Pogba’s injury, which may keep him out for a month or even six weeks depending upon your daily rag of choice, is not the end of the world.

Yes, he is one of the first names on the teamsheet and has been in good form recently, even scoring a couple of goals in the opening games, and yes, he will be missed.

He will probably be replaced, however, by Ander Herrera in some games and Marouane Fellaini in others and, occasionally, by both. The way the pair have been playing recently means that the loss of Pogba will not be felt quite as much as it might have been at a different time of the season. (more…)

Manchester United currently sit top of the Premier League after four games. They have won three of them without conceding a goal. The fourth, away at Stoke, was always going to be their toughest game to date and it was the one which ended their 100% record and their non-concession of goals but still saw them remain unbeaten with a 2-2 draw.

They have yet to play one of the recognised top six but will certainly need to improve on their last performance if they wish to maintain their current position. (more…)

After only four games of the new Premier League season it is, possibly, a little early to be making comparisons between the two summer signings.

Had things worked out the way most people expected them to we would now be writing this article about Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku and Manchester United’s Alvaro Morata but, in one of those ubiquitous twists of fate United, with a little help from super agent Paul Pogba and an initial fee of £75 million, secured the signing of Lukaku who just happened to be on holiday in Los Angeles with Pogba at the time of his signing. Having seen the Premier League season rudely interrupted when only three games into it’s new beginning, normal service was resumed on Saturday morning with the first game of the day.

This pitched Manchester City against their newly nominated “bogey team” Liverpool at The Etihad.

A win for City would maintain their unbeaten record and take their points tally up to ten. A win for Liverpool would do exactly the same, so a draw was the sensible, even-money bet. (more…)
