Pep Guardiola has cleared up a misunderstanding. Apparently, Kevin De Bruyne does not have a release clause of €250 million in his Manchester City contract. In fact, he doesn’t have a release clause at all. No, the manager merely stated that anybody wishing to buy the Belgian would have to start the bidding at that figure.

So where did the fake news come from? Well, some Spanish reporter, according to Guardiola his very self, misunderstood the answer to his question.

The bit about this where we are unsure is as to what language the question was asked and answered in. Logically, a Spanish reporter would ask a Spanish coach a question in Spanish, so why would there be any misunderstanding? (more…)

Nice one Gareth! His latest wheeze is that anybody expecting to play for his England team in the future should be playing regularly at their club.

He did leave the statement open to a little interpretation in that if, for example, he wanted to pick a team made up entirely of players from the Championship, then this would not represent a problem.

If he sticks with Premier League players then his team will not be competing at the top, (not that it has done anyway since 1966).

If he puts his new rule into immediate practice then his next team will contain Jordan Pickford, Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier, Harry Maguire, Dele Alli, Harry Kane and some Vanarama Conference League players. (more…)

That’s the meaningless friendlies Nation’s League out of the way for a whole month. Yes folks, just as you are getting used to watching your favourite overpaid Premier League stars, UEFA will pull the curtain down yet again. And the month after that and the month after that and so on.

They seem absolutely determined to spoil everybody’s enjoyment of the Premier League, (and other leagues around Europe, no doubt), by forcing their own idea of entertainment on the football loving public.

Call it what you will the Nation’s League, whilst being a little more competitive than just a few plain old friendlies is actually just a few plain old friendlies dressed up to go out. (more…)

The Nation’s League appears to have been afforded a reasonable reception by the football-hungry populace of Britain. Don’t get us wrong, given the choice between Premier League and this international excuse for a competition, 99.9% would plump for the Premier League although, taking into consideration the standard of the domestic leagues in Scotland, Wales and Ireland, it is difficult to assume that the same could be said in those countries.

In fairness, Wales had a decent start in beating the Republic of Ireland but then came undone when they met Denmark, a proper team.

However, a small and remote European footballing outpost did manage a win when Scotland beat Albania 2-0. (more…)

Firstly, we have to start this little monologue with the assertion that we think José Mourinho is doing an OK job at Manchester United. It isn’t perfect but we don’t think we could have reasonably expected much more out of the first two seasons in charge.

We were happy with the three trophies in his first season, even if none of them were “A list”. We appreciated that the team would slide down the table somewhat in their quest for Europa League glory so the sixth place finish was acceptable, particularly as the winning of Big Vase meant automatic qualification for The Champion’s League.

The following season saw an improvement in league form and finish but very little, if anything, else. Second place was a decent ending to the season but didn’t mask the fact that United were 19 points behind City. (more…)

Well, that’s the first week out of the way. Only another five days to go before the return of Premier League football.

This is good news for lovers of the game, avid supporters and masochists as every form of satisfaction will be delivered or denied over the coming weekend.

Why is it that, when the Premier League has been absent since May, we get four games into the new season and have to have an international injury window?

Is this just because the powers-that-be are a bunch of sadists? We are not thinking necessarily of just the effect on the fans here. They will tune in to the meaningless rubbish served up as top quality international football because they have nothing else to watch, that’s just the way it is and is why England, for example, will always attract a decent sized crowd at Wembley despite being rubbish. Sunsport, which is the very original name for the sports section of The Sun newspaper, has conducted an exclusive poll. This must mean that they were the only ones who thought it had any relevance and, on that basis, nobody would be really interested in the findings.

Wrong! As greedy gobblers of anything football related, particularly when it’s about the Premier League and, even more particularly, when it’s an oasis in the desert of an international injury window, we at WSA thought it was quite interesting reading.

The poll was to decide which of the Premier League managers had increased their popularity rating with the fans and which hadn’t, thereby heading in the opposite direction. (more…)

To be fair, this little snippet of information is to be found in “The Rumour Mill” which is the nearest the paper’s reporters are allowed to printing truths, half-truths and the occasional porky although they are not to know that at the time.

Europe’s “top” coaches who, apparently, don’t include Pep Guardiola who is probably the toppest, but do include Arséne Wenger who is neither a coach nor was he, latterly anyway, one of the top ones, have requested that UEFA take another look at the away goals rule. You know the one, it’s when a cup tie finishes level and the win is awarded to the team who scored the most goals in the away leg.

We were always under the misapprehension that the rule was introduced to stop teams boring supporters to death by defending for ninety minutes in the away leg of a tie, usually having won the home leg 1-0. It was to replace the coin toss and encourage the away side to play attacking football, or so we thought. (more…)

England’s superiority complex is what had held them back over the years. They have actually had some half-decent teams since winning the World Cup in 1966 but have usually gone out of tournaments meekly every time.

It is fair to say that this complex has become inverted and England have gone into most competitions expecting to be leaving for home early. They had, for many years, an inferiority complex, despite their supporters expecting them to win everything in which they have been involved for the last 52 years.

Now it is becoming clear as to why this has been happening. Using completely irrational logic they now think that LOSING a World Cup semi-final to a team ranked eight places below them in the world order is a successful tournament. (more…)
