A Boring Day In London And A Shorter Working Week

Sunday’s games were a treat for anybody from London. The rest of the world, forced by Sky TV to pay for, and watch, teams in whom they had little interest, just sat back in the hope that everybody’s favourite London club, West Ham, would beat nobody’s favourite London club, (except maybe some of their own supporters), Chelsea.

They also hoped that everybody’s favourite Merseyside club, Everton, would beat nobody’s favourite London club, (except maybe some of their own supporters), Arsenal.

The first game ended in a 0-0 draw which wasn’t quite as good as a west Ham win would have been but at least it prevented Chelsea from maintaining their 100% winning record. (more…)

Sergio Ramos, reportedly, once pointed out to José Mourinho that he couldn’t possibly empathise with players at Real Madrid as he had never played football at that level.

The “expert” pundits on Soccer Saturday are all ex-professional footballers who played the game at the top.

We are forever being told, usually by these ex-pros, that people who haven’t played the game at professional level can’t possibly have a reasonable discussion about football simply because they don’t know anything about it. (more…)

After defeats in The Champion’s League it will be a welcome return to The Premier League for both Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City.

Spurs managed to lose a game they should have won over in Italy and City managed to lose a game they were expected to win in Manchester.

The other teams involved in Europe all won and will be hoping to carry that form back into the domestic competition.

Arsenal and Chelsea both won in Big Vase whilst Manchester United and Liverpool won in Big Cup. (more…)

Well that was a mixed night for the city of Manchester. It turned out very well for the “United” of Manchester but the real “City” of Manchester fluffed their lines spectacularly.

In a game away from home, on a plastic pitch against a team who top the Swiss League having won all of their first six games, this was a potential banana skin for United.

They coped with it very well and, after a reasonable start by the Swiss, opened the scoring through a rejuvenated Paul Pogba. Now given more of a roaming role with Nemanja Matic and Fred as the two holding midfielders, the Frenchman is beginning to look the part. (more…)

Two of England’s finest stepped into Champion’s League action for the first time this season. Tottenham Hotspur travelled to Milan where they met Inter and Liverpool travelled to Anfield where they were playing PSG.

The former seemed to be in control of their game and led 0-1 for most of it, thanks to a goal from Christian Eriksen.

Inter were decidedly average so quite how they managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat will be a source of disappointment for Mauricio Pochettino, particularly if Spurs fail to qualify from this group. (more…)

So Wednesday night sees the first Champion’s League football for Manchester City and United. City at home to Lyon and United away in Switzerland playing Young Boys.

With their usual consideration for supporters UEFA have scheduled these games to kick off at the same time meaning anybody wanting to watch both, can’t.

This is a variation on the previous night’s games which saw Inter Milan and Tottenham Hotspur kick off at 7:00pm whilst Liverpool and PSG started at 9:00pm. No doubt there will have been football fans around Europe who wanted to see both matches and this timing will have made that possible. (more…)

Some people, notably ex-players/managers, also notably, Stuart Pearce, who was never better than average in either role, are against the introduction of VAR.

They live with their heads in the sand which, by definition, also places them in the dark ages.

What they want is for referees to continue to get major decisions wrong. They see this as the way forward. They want diabolical calls, such as the Frank Lampard “goal” against Germany at the 2010 World Cup, to remain unchecked and uncorrected. (more…)

With Chelsea and Liverpool setting the pace at the top of the Premier League and Manchester City only two points behind them the questions now become two which are; can they maintain their standards and what can Tottenham, Arsenal and United do about it?

In fourth and fifth place respectively sit Bournemouth and Watford who have done well to climb the ladder to such a giddy height this early in the season. Realistically though, they can both be expected to find a snake down which to descend in the not-too-distant future as neither are particularly well equipped squad-wise for a sustained tilt at the top six. In direct competition with each other for the viewing affections of WSA this Saturday was the Vitality T20 blast or, more precisely, Lancashire, against the dubious attraction of watching a team from London play a team from Liverpool in the Premier League.

No contest, Lancashire versus Worcestershire in the first semi-final it was then. We could join the football after this game which would, no doubt, prove that the game of cricket can regularly provide more excitement than the game of football.

And such was the case but only for fans of Worcestershire. Lancashire were pretty awful and lost the game by 20 runs and thus ended our interest in finals day. (more…)

Pep Guardiola has cleared up a misunderstanding. Apparently, Kevin De Bruyne does not have a release clause of €250 million in his Manchester City contract. In fact, he doesn’t have a release clause at all. No, the manager merely stated that anybody wishing to buy the Belgian would have to start the bidding at that figure.

So where did the fake news come from? Well, some Spanish reporter, according to Guardiola his very self, misunderstood the answer to his question.

The bit about this where we are unsure is as to what language the question was asked and answered in. Logically, a Spanish reporter would ask a Spanish coach a question in Spanish, so why would there be any misunderstanding? (more…)
