Confused? It’s hardly surprising after the noises coming out of Madrid! Only minutes after winning the trophy for the thirteenth time in their history and the third time in the last three years, two of the BBC were talking of their futures as though they had played their last games as a Galáctico.

The other member of the BBC, Karim Benzema, probably realises how lucky he is to be playing at a club whose manager is from the same ethnic background as he is and, probably because of this, keeps selecting him no matter how average a player he is. So he is keeping his mouth shut at present.

Liverpool played reasonably well despite losing the Champion’s League final 3-1 to Real Madrid. They were unlucky to lose Mo Salah to injury in the first half and also had a shot from Sadio Mané come back off a post when, had it gone in, they would have taken a 2-1 lead.

These are the finer details which can sometimes be the difference between winning and losing but, the general feeling is, that Madrid would have won the game even if Salah had not been injured and Mané’s shot had gone in.

Liverpool were undone by two goalkeeping howlers which would have looked out of place in a schoolboy game between under-13s. (more…)

It’s approaching that time of the year when supporters of football clubs around Europe start to get excited about who their club may buy in the upcoming transfer window.

This period of excitement is usually followed, when the window actually opens, by many days of disappointment as fans get up each morning to the news that their beloved club has bought……..nobody! Not yet anyway.

The thoughts of the majority of managers these days is to get their transfer business out of the way early in the window so that any new arrivals will have the maximum amount of time possible to get to know their new team mates. (more…)

Which Manchester United Players AREN’T For Sale Under José Mourinho?

The short answer to that one is; none.

Having said that, the likelihood of David De Gea being sold unless he wants to be sold is practically zero. The same can probably be said about Romelu Lukaku who, in his first season and with plenty of critics, has still managed to score 26 goals in all his appearances to date.

Alexis Sánchez would also be on the “unlikely to be sold” list as he is a genuinely world class player and Mourinho will expect to see the best of him next season when he will have had a full pre-season build-up with the squad.

Nemanja Matić, as a Mourinho favourite, is probably also safe from the chop.

Anybody else would appear to be fair game. (more…)

So that’s the end of the international injury windows for this season. The next friendlies on the horizon are in June after the proper football has finished.

England signed off with a draw, at home, against Italy who couldn’t even qualify for this year’s World Cup. Quite why this gives the so-called experts such optimism for the tournament itself is a little baffling.

Our playground logic suggests to us that, if they can’t beat a team which DIDN’T qualify for the finals in Russia, at home, then what chance do they have of beating any of the ones who DID qualify and beat them on foreign soil to boot! (more…)

Providing José Mourinho tones down his criticism of Manchester United’s past, their heritage and previous managers, he will probably still be manager next season. He will, however, have to start proving that he is as brilliant as he says he is and a good start would be to remain level with, or ahead of, Manchester City in the opening weeks of the new season.

In an attempt to rein in Guardiola’s team, Mourinho will clear some of the deadwood lying around in the dusty corners of Carrington so that he can bring in yet more new players because, in all fairness, £300 million goes absolutely nowhere these days.

Manchester City will end this season as Premier League champions. They have been far and away the stand-out team in the division since day one and will, deservedly, be confirmed as winners, possibly as soon as when they play Manchester United at The Etihad in April.

Is that rubbing salt into United wounds? Not really, City are bound to be crowned champions at some stage and does it really make a difference against which team they are playing when it happens? Absolutely not.

What must be more annoying, particularly for José Mourinho, is that one of the main reasons City have been so good this season is the form of one of his Chelsea cast-offs! (more…)

Having sat through the 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night, we couldn’t help reminiscing about the innumerable times we have suggested that Antonio Valencia, an ageing right winger, cannot play right-back because he can’t defend.

We have, also on many occasions, thought exactly the same about Ashley Young, also an ageing right winger, who is now playing at left-back. He too cannot defend.

Chris Smalling is a donkey of a defender who only knows one way of playing. He kicks out in the general direction of the ball and, occasionally, successfully connects. He is constantly caught out of position and frequently gives possession away too easily. (more…)

That’s it! The January sales are over for another year! Clubs have ‘invested’ a few million again and will discover, over the remainder of the season, whether it has been money well spent or not.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – Arsenal’s new party-loving signing

Arsenal would seem to have slightly improved their lot having signed Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund respectively.

The two ex-team mates will now renew acquaintances with each other at The Emirates.

Hopefully the Gabonese international will still be happy with his move when he finds out that Arsenal aren’t really in the Champion’s League, are out of the FA Cup and won’t finish in the top four of the Premier League this season. Whoever tells him may need to leave the room quite quickly shortly afterwards! (more…)
