With it’s usual bells, whistles and fanfares Sky Sports’ “breaking transfer news” was that Harry Maguire would, more than likely, stay at Leicester City.

This hardly qualifies as “transfer news” as it is actually stating that he is unlikely to be transferred. That minor detail, however, is of total irrelevance to a broadcasting great like Sky who pride themselves on making the most enormous mountains out of the tiniest of molehills and are unequalled in their ability to do so.

JosĂ© Mourinho was reported to be interested in buying Harry Maguire but the price Leicester City have been talking is totally ridiculous for a player even the overpaying Ed Woodward values at ÂŁ65 million, which is still ÂŁ15 million over the odds. With only nine days of the transfer window left nothing much is happening. Despite clubs wanting business done early because of the World Cup, only West Ham and Liverpool appear to have done very much about it, although Everton are catching up.

At the time of writing Manchester United have spent the third highest amount of all the Premier League clubs but they have only really bought one player, Fred, who can expect to be a regular next season.

Not long to wait now, it’s almost here. The new Premier League season kicks off on August 10th when Manchester United play Leicester City in the first Friday night football of the new term.

It was tried out last year and deemed, by Sky of course, to be a success. Never one to take into consideration the difficulties caused to the travelling fans by rescheduling games so that supporters now have to either leave work early or take time off to get to the ground, the broadcaster has proven yet again that the only interest it has in football whatsoever is purely financial. As the International Champion’s Cup draws to a close we can only wonder at the “expert’s” comments that a team, travelling half way round the world to play another team located 30 miles away in England, can benefit from such a trip.

Manchester United have, reportedly, made a bid for Harry Maguire. The bid is in the region of ÂŁ65 million which is the value they have placed on him having had a reasonably successful World Cup.

According to experts, whoever they may be, he was actually worth ÂŁ25 million before his escapades in Russia and is now worth ÂŁ50 million so maybe Ed Woodward knows something we don’t or maybe he is just throwing an extra ÂŁ15 million in to make sure the deal happens. So Gareth Southgate is up for a gong. Having taken his mediocre team, which would struggle in the Premier League, to a World Cup semi-final he is now being tipped to be given the FIFA Coach of the Year award.

So what are the qualifications for this nomination? Well, apparently, not very many. He only beat teams who are ranked below his team except one. It was, unfortunately for Gawpy Gareth, the important one which prevented England undeservedly reaching their first World Cup final for 52 years. He didn’t beat a nation ranked above his team even after having been given two bites at the cherry, one of which was against their reserves.

Mesut Ă–zil has retired from international football. Not for the usual reasons of being too old, or too slow or even too good. No, he has retired because he feels disrespected after racist comments were made about him following his being photographed alongside the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip ErdoÄźan.

What did he expect? Whilst we deplore all racism there was bound to be some reaction to such a thoughtless action.

Anthony “Marmite” Martial is reaching a crossroads in his career at the ripe old age of 22.

He is adored by some fans, hated by others. He is criticised for his demeanour which is, in fact, very similar to that of his manager. He is criticised for his lack of workrate. He is considered by some to be lazy, a player who only wants to be involved in the nicer aspects of a football match.
