Will The Top Six Keep Their Current Managers Next Season?

The current top six are unlikely to remain with their present managers for too long unless they find a way of sharing the trophies between them on an annual basis.

The Holy Grail, however, remains the Premier League title but with half an eye on winning the Champion’s League, (unless you are Arsenal, in which case just qualifying for the competition is sufficient).

If, this season for example, sees Chelsea win the title, City, United and Tottenham finish in the top four and Liverpool and Arsenal making up the remainder of the top six then little should change for next season. (more…)

The Premier League is beginning to take shape. The top six are starting to pull away from the rest and all that remains now is to see in which order they finish.

This is all a little better than in previous years when the top four has usually consisted of Manchester United, City, Chelsea and Arsenal, not necessarily in that order.

Other than last season when Leicester City gatecrashed the party there is a familiar look to four of the top six but two new arrivals are threatening the natural order of things. (more…)

Manchester United appointed Jose Mourinho in the full knowledge that he rarely stays at any club for more than two years, whether the reason for departure is his choosing or not. He has since indicated that he would like to stay at Old Trafford for “many years“.

Manchester City did the same with Pep Guardiola. Having spent five years in charge at Barcelona, (one of them with the B team), he developed his current wanderlust and spent a further two years in charge of Bayern MĂĽnich. The impression is that, if he is successful at City, then he may be talked into staying longer. (more…)

Despite blaming bad luck and referees for United’s poor displays while losing the last three games, JosĂ© Mourinho needs to be given time to sort out the problems at Old Trafford.

He has brought in four players who will all prove to be value for money but, at the moment, they are trying to fit into an average team. (more…)

The Guardian calls them the “Magnificent Seven”, (that’s quite original for the Guardian!). These are the seven teams they reckon have a realistic chance of winning the Premier League title. They even have a natty little video to demonstrate which teams they are referring to. Have a look here, it’s quite good.

Now, even more realistically, which of the following managers will lift the trophy next May?

Arsene Wenger:

There isn’t much to say about Wenger that hasn’t already been said in his long time at Arsenal. There does seem to be some truth in the rumour that he is happy to finish in the top three, top four at a push, so that qualification for the Champion’s League is assured each year. This keeps the board happy but leaves the fans frustrated. Because this attitude seems to prevail at the Emirates, they will not win the title and may even struggle for top four this time out. I like Tottenham. I like them in a way that only someone who isn’t a supporter can like them. I laugh at their little jokes, cry with them in times of sadness and am constantly amazed at how much they think they can achieve, without ever achieving any of it.

Take Emmanuel Adebayor, as I am sure Spurs wish somebody would. He left Arsenal and went to Manchester City, shortly after which he was sent on loan to Real Madrid who, obviously unimpressed, sent him back fairly pronto. City then sent him on loan again, this time to Spurs, who were so impressed that they bought him. Now they don’t want him and he won’t leave. Well, not until he gets a sign from God that it is the right thing to do. Five million pound signs ought to do it.

How about Tactics Tim? He was doing fine at Tottenham and actually seemed to get the best out of Adebayor. He gave Harry Kane his debut, along with other youngsters. Unfortunately, his profile didn’t fit with Dastardly Dan, who wanted immediate success with a bigger name than Sherwood. So goodbye Tim! Aston Villa’s youngsters are now benefitting from Tim’s babysitting skills. (more…)

Shortly before the transfer window officially opened Louis van Gaal told everyone who would listen that he wanted ALL his transfer business concluding before the pre-season tour to the US of A.

This makes sense in many ways. It gives any new signings the chance to get to know their new team mates on and off the pitch. It gives them the chance to get to know the club and the way it works. It also gives them the opportunity to play some games where the result doesn’t really matter. All of this culminating, hopefully, in a harmonious and reenergised team returning to the UK raring to go. (more…)
