When José Mourinho was sacked by Roman Abramovich a year ago, many people thought he had lost the plot and had reached the stage where managing a top flight football club was no longer the challenge he required.
He was well into his second coming at the club and had won the Premier League title in the previous season. So what happened?

Wayne Rooney, depending upon which newspaper you choose to believe, is paid anything form ÂŁ200k – ÂŁ300k per week.
He is proud of his achievements in the game. That is fine, but what has he actually achieved that nobody else has?
He is captain of Manchester United because there was nobody else at the time but, most people would agree, he should not be captain of United.
He is captain of England because he is captain of Manchester United and, again, most people would agree, it is not a position he should be holding. (more…)
For the first time in a long time, if not for the first time at all, I feel the need to add a little background to this article.
I have just watched Manchester United’s Europa League game against Fenerbahće in an Irish bar in Granada, Spain.
I mention this purely as an excuse for any inaccuracies you may spot while reading said article. It was, in fact, a very noisy music night where a quartet of Spanish musicians played Irish tunes, virtually non-stop, for the entire evening. Would you be happy to see your goalscoring records taken from you by this man?
No? I didn’t think so. There is an injustice about the whole thing which makes it seem so totally surreal.
One of the two is about to celebrate 60 years since making his Manchester United debut, the other one isn’t. One is universally liked and respected, the other one isn’t.
Sir Bobby, of course, was and will be the first to congratulate Rooney both for the England record he has already achieved and the Manchester United one which, if he continues to be as bad as he has been for the last few years, he may not achieve. We live in hope! Privately, I would be very surprised if Charlton is happy with this situation. (more…)
How consistent is José Mourinho? More to the point, how consistent can he become?
The general impression is that manager of Manchester United is one of the jobs he has always wanted. Depending upon which is your rag of choice, when he was overlooked by United in favour of David Moyes, he either cried, along with a few million fans, or he wasn’t bothered because he had already decided to go back to Chelsea. 1. Finish in the top four at least
If, by the end of this season, Manchester United have finished in the top four then this would have to be perceived as more successful than last season.
Failure to even get in a position where pre-qualification was necessary for the Champion’s League was the final nail in the coffin of Louis Van Gaal. The previous couple of nails had been the boring football and the fact that his popularity with the fans had sunk lower than a snake’s belly. (more…)
The first, and probably most obvious, is that he is a tall target man with talent. This is not to say that United have not had this type of player in the past, it’s just something they have been short of for a while.
Robin van Persie, although 6’2″ in height was never a prolific goalscorer with his head and the same can be said for United’s other “tall” strikers in the recent past. (more…)
José Mourinho and the Manchester United supporters will hope it was just a blip, just one of those things. Losing to City was inexcusable but not a major shock. Feyenoord was a bad performance, which can happen. The Watford loss was the worrying one.
This was a game from which United would have been expecting three points, at worst one point, but they ended the day with none. The trip home would have been very quiet. (more…)
Despite blaming bad luck and referees for United’s poor displays while losing the last three games, JosĂ© Mourinho needs to be given time to sort out the problems at Old Trafford.
He has brought in four players who will all prove to be value for money but, at the moment, they are trying to fit into an average team. (more…)
If José Mourinho is serious about winning the Premier League then he has to take a long look at the squad and, mainly, at some of the players he has inherited.
Quite simply there are some who are just not good enough to wear the shirt. Whether this is a case of having grown older and become, naturally, slower of mind and body, or a case of just not being good enough in the first place, it is time for a little cleansing. (more…)
