Back in 2013 when “Sir Alex of Govan” retired he placed his ceremonial sword in a hole in a convenient stone. Fed up with the lack of competition in the Premier League and annoyed by the quality of opposition in the Champion’s League, he decided to call it a day.

Now the sword was just waiting to be removed by his rightful heir.

First up was “Moyes the Clueless” another Scot, indeed another Glaswegian and also a favourite of Lord Ferg. But try as he might he could not budge the sword. Despite signing world-class talent such as the coveted Marouane Fellaini and actually reaching the quarter finals of the Champion’s League, he really didn’t have a clue how to manage Manchester United. So what did we learn about England’s World Cup chances from their win against The Netherlands? Not a lot that we haven’t known for the last fifty years or so, that’s what!

The fact that Gareth Southgate’s men managed to scrape a 0-1 win at the home of a team who couldn’t even qualify for this year’s tournament says more about the Dutch than it does about England.

Holland is a team in transition. Having reached the semi-final of the last World Cup and the final of the one prior to that, their fall from grace has been quite spectacular.

Now, with new manager Ronald Koeman in charge, the onus is on youth and the need to provide experience to some of the lesser known players so they can become the greats of the future. (more…)

Now that the Premier League season is nearly over and Manchester City are about to be crowned champions thoughts can begin to turn to the World Cup which begins in June.

The usual boring group games will be supplemented by some pretty good looking group games where two teams who are actually decent will be playing each other.

Of course, what usually happens in these matches is that the two teams in question have either already qualified or are massive favourites to do so and they play out a boring draw because they don’t need anything else! (more…)

Manchester United are in prime position to finish second in the Premier League after the recent win over Liverpool and it is vital that the club now ends the season on a high note by holding on to that position.

Boss JosĂ© Mourinho is currently under pressure after the defeat to Sevilla in the Champions League. While United have lost in the knockout stages in Europe’s elite club competition on a number of occasions during the last decade, it was the manner of the loss that rankled with fans. During both legs of the match, United were complacent and passive, failing to attack the La Liga side with any pace or purpose. (more…)

Providing José Mourinho tones down his criticism of Manchester United’s past, their heritage and previous managers, he will probably still be manager next season. He will, however, have to start proving that he is as brilliant as he says he is and a good start would be to remain level with, or ahead of, Manchester City in the opening weeks of the new season.

In an attempt to rein in Guardiola’s team, Mourinho will clear some of the deadwood lying around in the dusty corners of Carrington so that he can bring in yet more new players because, in all fairness, £300 million goes absolutely nowhere these days.

Second in the Premier League and through to the semi-finals of the FA Cup. Not too shabby and in fact, if it hadn’t been for the way his team were knocked out of the Champion’s League by Sevilla, the cracks would be well and truly papered over.

However, Mourinho chose, in his warped way of doing things, to criticise his team after they had just won rather than when they deserved it following a pathetic performance in Europe.

Placing his favourite signing, Nemanja Matić, on a pedestal of invincibility, he proceeded to label the rest as not having the character or personality to play for Manchester United. He pointed out, as he had when Chelsea lost to Leicester shortly before he was sacked, that the players had failed to follow his instructions. (more…)

(JosĂ© Mourinho’s “couldn’t-care-less” attitude is annoying many United supporters and turning them against him)

Where to begin? That is the question.

José Mourinho is, without doubt, arrogant, selfish, ego-centric and has a superiority complex which would have had even the great Brian Clough questioning his own importance in the presence of such a man!

The difference between Mourinho and a manager Like Brian Clough is that Clough was always fairly honest in his interviews with the press. He knew that a lot of fans watched those question and answer sessions and he thought they deserved the truth.

After their pathetic performance against Sevilla, which resulted in yet another exit from the Champion’s League, the Portuguese had the chance to express his remorse. (more…)

In a game where José Mourinho managed to outwit himself by starting Marouane Fellaini whilst leaving footballers like Juan Mata, Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay on the bench, the first half crawled by.

United played like a team who were 4-0 up from the first leg, not a team who needed to score to get through!

Sevilla weren’t much better but at least knew that if they could score on the break then United would need two. The problem was that neither team appeared to realise that they needed to score! (more…)

The race for the final three places in the top four is certainly hotting up with Chelsea now within four points of Liverpool who currently occupy fourth spot.

It would appear though, that despite a morale-boosting win in the Europa League over AC Milan being followed by a comfortable home win against Watford, Arsenal’s Premier League race is run and the best they can hope for is to maybe catch Chelsea in fifth. Even for that to happen there would need to be a major derailment of Antonio Conte’s train, as the gap between the two is currently eight points. (more…)

The answer is that they want both. Not through greed but because up the road, in east Manchester, Pep Guardiola is proving that having both is possible.

In all our years watching Manchester United there has rarely been a prolonged period of time where attractive football has been accompanied by trophies and, yes, we can go back a fair bit further than some of the so-called “fans” of today. You know the ones, they are screaming for the manager’s head having won two trophies in his first season and now sitting second in the Premier League while still contesting the later stages of both the FA Cup and the Champion’s League.
