It would appear that Alexis Sánchez will have a choice of two clubs to join when he finally gets his wish to leave Arsenal.

He would actually have a choice of several clubs if he were prepared to move away from England but, to give him credit, he wants to stay in the Premier League rather than take the easy money on offer in a warmer climate with less competition and fewer games.

So a return to Spain has been ruled out and he managed to politely price himself out of a move to Bayern Münich by demanding wages he knew would never be offered. PSG would also probably be an option but, as we said, he has decided that the Premier League is where he wants to be. (more…)

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is jealous of the success Antonio Conte has had at his former club Chelsea, says pundit Tony Gale.

“I think he feels a little bit jealous of Conte and what he’s achieved at Chelsea,” Gale said on Sky Sports. “He shouldn’t be because he achieved so much himself.

It kind of takes the little edge and pressure off of what’s happening at Manchester United, that probably isn’t good enough.

So Alexis Sánchez may move to Manchester City. Then again, he may not. It all really depends on what mood Pep Guardiola is in at the time.

There was a short period when it seemed that City no longer had any interest in the Chilean but then Gabriel Jesus went and got himself injured and this, it appears, has reignited that interest. City would expect to get him for around £20 million.

If this money is offered to Stubborn Old Man then he would be well advised to take it as the alternative is to let the player go for free in summer. To City it doesn’t make a lot of difference. They either pay the money now, and to Arsenal, or they wait and pay the money in summer but to Sánchez as a signing-on fee. (more…)

On another ground-breaking day of football transfers Sky Sports News, having finally tired of leading with the perpetually “Breaking News” that Philippe Coutinho has signed for Barcelona, led with the equally earth-shattering headline, (to some people anyway), that once great Yorkshire giants “Dirty” Leeds had signed Yosuke Ideguchi from Gamba Osaka which, apparently, IS a football club and not a savoury dish involving prawns.

Now we are well aware that Leeds United is still a big club and is probably destined to return to the Premier League at some stage in it’s future but the signing of a 21 year-old Japanese player for an undisclosed fee, (£500,000 is the best press guess), who has immediately been loaned out to Spanish giants Cultural Leonesa until the end of the season, is hardly the stuff of which world headlines should be made. How has it reached this? How has a simple comment from Mourinho been blown up out of all proportion whereby all past histrionics and bad behaviour are now being quoted on both sides of the argument?

Hands up those who believe that a quadruple is impossible for this Manchester City team!

Facing the all-conquering Bristol City in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup, Basel in the next round of the Champion’s League and with a fifteen points lead in the Premier League, only the FA Cup is an unknown quantity as far as opponents go, but there is nobody to fear in that competition.

What’s impossible about that? Guardiola’s Barcelona team once won six trophies in a season so how can the quadruple for City be “impossible”. As they say, as long as they are in it, they can win it! (more…)

The FA Cup may not be quite as glamorous as it used to be but it is still a trophy that the top clubs want to win.

An appearance at Wembley nowadays is no reward for reaching the final. After all, drawing Tottenham Hotspur away will have the same outcome this season, as will reaching the semi-final and it is this devaluation of the national stadium which has been a major contributor to the FA Cup losing much of it’s gloss. Having already splashed out £1.8 million on the signing of Konstantinos Mavropanos from PAS Giannina, Stubborn Old Man may be getting in the mood to scour the market for more bargain buys.

He will send the Greek defender out on loan and thereby hand the problem of coming up with a terrace chant incorporating his name to the supporters of some other club, probably in Germany.

The only other player thought to be on Arsenal’s radar is Thomas Lemar but, having turned them down once due to the lack of Champion’s League involvement, he is unlikely to change his mind having noted, no doubt, the continued lack of ambition at the club. (more…)

In Ed Woodward’s short and largely unsuccessful reign as whatever additional title he now holds regarding his control of the transfer policy at Manchester United, he has already had to deal with three managers.

David Moyes was the easy one. Ed was brand new to the position as was Moyes so they muddled through the first transfer window together like two kids meeting for the first time when starting school on the same day.

Ed made a mess of things that time back in 2013 and United ended up with Juan Mata, thanks to Sir Alex Ferguson and David Gill, and Marouane Fellaini thanks to Woodward who missed the deadline for a decent discount on the deal and ended up paying £4 million more than he needed to. He still gives the occasional interview but is seen a lot less than he was when he first broke into the first team.

Back then it appeared that he was always on social media, or the United website or TV, usually with his tongue sticking out in ridiculously childish poses for the camera.

That is why the United fans didn’t take to him immediately. At Old Trafford it is always better to PLAY like a good footballer and earn the supporters respect, BEFORE you start behaving like a spoilt superstar.

Once you have made it then the fans will forgive almost anything, just ask George Best and, to a much lesser extent, Wayne Rooney. (more…)
